The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
