EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
